    Notes:

    Name:
Some records have Joe listed as Joe Pinion Eller. According to Jerry Taylor (noted Towns County Historian), this is not correct.

Joseph married Mariah HEDDEN on 3 Jan 1825 in Rabun County, Georgia. Mariah (daughter of Elisha Hedden and Elizabeth Pinson) was born about 1808 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina; died about 1864 in Towns County, Georgia; was buried about 1864 in Upper Hightower, Towns County, Georgia. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

Mariah Eller died about 1864 during the troubled times of the Civil War. Family tradition relates that she was staying with Caroline Hooper, her daughter, when Caroline's baby, Callie, was born. Mariah sent word to Caroline's husband, William Hooper, that he was needed at home. William "slipped in" home but the Home Guards hearing of his arrival, came after him to take him back to the War. When they came, Mariah blocked the front door while her son-in-law slipped out the back into the woods. Those men who honored themselves by the title of Guard pushed the valiant lady out of the doorway. She fell to the ground sustaining injuries from which she never recovered.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  [Unknown] Starnes was born in 1783; died in 1840 in Davidson County, NC.

    Notes:

It is possible this is George Starnes, born 1760 in Maryland, died in 1840 in Davidson County, NC.
This research shows five additional children from this union: George Michael Starnes (1802-1880); Malinda Starnes (1805-1868); Jacob Starnes (1811-1864); William Starnes (1816-1900) and Cynthia Avaline Starnes (1817- ).

It is possible this is John Starnes. A John Starnes was living in Buncombe County, NC, by 1820. He was born about 1779 in NC and was still living in Buncombe 1850. He died 20 Dec 1855 and estate was administered in Jan. 1856. He owned several slaves. John is buried with a tombstone Riverside Cemetery, Asheville, NC.

In some research DNA markers say that Charles Evans was Jacob’s father. Charles was full blooded Cherokee Indian. If Evans was a Cherokee the name would have been taken from a previous settler he worked for. Susannah not being married kept the Eller name for her children.

[Unknown] married Susannah "Sukey" ELLER. Susannah (daughter of John Jacob "Jake" ELLER, Jr. and Mary Marlena BIFFLE) was born about 1787 in North Carolina (now Sullivan County, Tennessee); died in Feb 1864 in Dillard, Rabun County, Georgia; was buried in Head of Tennessee Baptist Church Cemetery, Dillard, Rabun County, Georgia. [Group Sheet]

  2. 9.  Susannah "Sukey" ELLER was born about 1787 in North Carolina (now Sullivan County, Tennessee) (daughter of John Jacob "Jake" ELLER, Jr. and Mary Marlena BIFFLE); died in Feb 1864 in Dillard, Rabun County, Georgia; was buried in Head of Tennessee Baptist Church Cemetery, Dillard, Rabun County, Georgia.

    Notes:

It is generally believed that Susannah “Sukey” Eller was not married. All her children carried her maiden name, Eller.

It is believed that her son, Joseph, was fathered by a man with the last name Starnes. DNA testing of one of Joseph's descendants confirms a Starnes link. It is possible Mr. Starnes also fathered William & Jake. Jerry Taylor, noted Towns County Teacher and Historian, wrote that a John Starnes was living in Buncombe, County, North Carolina by 1820. He was born in North Carolina about 1779 and was still living in Buncombe County in 1850.

DNA testing by Edward K. Eller suggests the father of Jacob "Jake" Eller may have been Charles Evans. Charles Evans is believed to have been a Cherokee Indian.

Rabun County, Georgia Probate Court - 1826: On complaint of John Dillard the court orders Susannah Eller to appear at the next term to show cause why her children should not be bound out(adopted). The children were Susannah's two youngest children; William who would have been 10 years old and Cynthia Avaline who would have been 11 years old. John Dillard and his wife had already adopted Susannah's daughter Malinda.
