Lester Paul O'Neal was born June 26, 1908 to Frank and Tessa (Ocheltree) O'Neal on a farm southwest of Fedora, Soouth Dakota. He graduated from Fedora High School and attended South Dakota State University. Lester farmed near Fedora, and in 1940, purchased the Fedora Telephone Service Company. He expanded it to serve Artesian and Raybille. in 1947, he was chairman of the State Independent Telephone Association. He sold the exchange in 1956.
On June 11, 1944, he married Leora Kothe in Aberdeen, South Dakota. They farmed near Fedora. To this union were born four children.
An active member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge since 1944, he served as Grand Master in 1972-1973 and was on the Board of the I.O.O.F. Home in Dell Rapids, South Dakota from 1972-1984.
Lester was an active member of the Fedora Endeavor Presbyterian Church and served as Church Treasurer, Trustee, an Elder, and on several boards. He was supervisor of the Clinton Township Board and served on the Rural Development Planning Commission.
Those grateful for sharing his life include his wife; Leora of Fedora, South Dakota; four children: Jane (Chuck) Hodgkin of Yankton, South Dakota; Judy (Don) Deming of Omaha, Nebraska; John (Jill) O'Neal of Red Oak, Iowa; Jim (Barbara) O'Neal of Lindenhurst, Illinois; seven grandchildren;one step-grandchild; one great-grandchild; three step-great-grandchildren, and one brother Dave O'Neal of Edgemont, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister: Dorathy; and one infant brother and sister.
