- People (even family members) have confused William M. Berrong (1866-1934) and William J. Berrong (1828-1910+) and often merged them into one person.
William J. Berrong (1828-1910+) was a notorious moonshiner dubbed “King of the Moonshiners” by the Internal Revenue agents. Locally, he was referred to as “Wild Bill Berrong.” The community where he lived became known as Scataway because when the revenue agents were lurking about, Wild Bill and his cronies would scat-away into the mountains. It is not known when he died but is last listed on the 1910 census of Cherokee County, NC, living with a child.
William M. Berrong (1866-1934) was the son of Wild Bill. The son was known as Little Bill. Moonshining and alcoholism running rampant in this extended family resulted in all kinds of poverty and dysfunction, resulting in Little Bill being shot dead by his own son Boniface “Bon” Berrong on April 27, 1934. Bon was sentenced to the penitentiary but toward the end was transferred to Battey State Hospital - TB Asylum in Rome, GA, where he died on June 22, 1954. [1]
