Martin had worked in various jobs. He was working for a farmer near Pierson, Paul Sadler. In 1937 Martin and his family had moved to Washington State to be near some of Mary's relatives. Mary had several relatives living near McCleary, where the family lived. Martin was able to get work at a veneer mill.

He was an efficient and industrious worker. By nature he was quiet and retiring, always thoughtful of others, and wherever he went he made friends. He was a firm believer in God and the Bible, and he strove earnestly to follow their teachings.

On Feb. 26th of that year he became ill with the flu which developed into pneumonia. It got worse, and on Mar. 3rd was taken to the hospital. Everything possible for human hands was done for him but his resistence had been weakened by the flu and all efforts proved futile. He died at 2:15 AM on March 6, 1937. He was buried in Washington State in Elma. Relatives were unable to attend because it was too far. Mary and the children stayed in McCleary for a time but eventually went to live with a relative in the Dakotas.
