    • James Temple was "...well educated, of a quiet disposition and noted for his integrity, was greatly respected for his many virtues. He was a farmer, owning a large farm and a number of slaves. He was also a surveyor, but this was an accomplishment rather than a profession, an no mean one a hundred years ago." (Mary B. Temple, "Notable Men of Tennessee.")
      James Temple was about 40 when he married. He died at 50 of malaria while on a surveying trip near Memphis, TN. All the children were young at his passing.
      Parker Temple says he served in the military between 1799 and 1801 in Washington Co., TN. He was initially commissioned as a Cornet in the Washington District Cavalry Regiment on 24 Jun 1799, and he was advanced to Captain on 27 Jan 1801.
